GIOVANNI DIMOLA - PHOTOGRAPHER
Artist Statement
My work expresses the direct link between inner emotional states of mind and the image seen by the viewer. As a photographer, I use the subject to convey feelings of loss, despair, triumph or whatever reflects my current perspective . Vulnerability and self-identity are what I reveal in contrast to preexisting, imposed definitions. Poetic, visual and spontaneous unspoken truths are captured through the medium; this is most especially true for my portrait work. I am keenly interested in a visual language of revealing and subverting identity; using the familiar in unfamiliar ways, disorienting the viewer and playing with the notion of identity.
My approach is based on traditional principles of photography using the digital medium. The images are composed through the lens at the moment of the capture and are never manipulated and edited. Longer exposures provide richer detail and texture as well as references to movement and time. The images are printed with archival ink (through inkjet) on archival watercolor paper.
