Artist Statement
Georgia Ranney was born in 1952 in Detroit, Michigan. She received a B.A. from the University of Michigan in 1980 and a MFA from the University of Michigan in 1983. While a student at Michigan she studied painting with Gerome Kamrowski, a New York artist with the surrealist movement of William Baziotes in New York in the 1940's.
In 1985 she left Ann Arbor to travel for a year with her husband, Lee, and eventually settled in Willow Bend, West Virginia, where they began farming. They developed a working cattle farm with a herd of angus cows
and calves. Throughout the time she lived in West Virginia, she exhibited her artwork at the David L. Dickirson Fine Arts Gallery, Tamarack, Beckley, West Virginia, participating in two group shows a year. In 2004 they moved to Columbia County, New York, to the Kinderhook Farm where they continue to farm concentrating on grass-fed
beef and free-range laying hens.
The horses, chickens and cows in her monotypes are inspired by the animals living here on the Kinderhook Farm. The images are developed from drawings and photographs which are then painted onto plates and run
through a press so that each image is unique.
